0% VAT on solar and batteries ends 31 March 2027
Since 2022, homeowners in Great Britain have paid no VAT on solar panels and home batteries. That’s due to end on 31 March 2027, which gives installers six months of a genuine, time-limited reason to act now.
What the 0% rate covers
The zero rate applies to energy-saving materials supplied and installed in homes in Great Britain. For solar, that includes:
- Solar PV panels and the inverter
- Battery storage installed alongside panels
- Standalone batteries fitted on their own (included since 1 February 2024)
- Scaffolding, cabling and labour, when supplied as one installation contract
What happens after 31 March 2027?
Unless the government extends it, the zero rate is scheduled to end on 31 March 2027. After that, these installations would go back to the reduced rate of VAT.
Keep it accurate
Only say a homeowner will “save the VAT” if the installation is supplied and fitted as one contract in Great Britain. Northern Ireland follows different rules.
